You can roll a d4 in place of the normal damage of your unarmed strike or monk weapon. This die changes as you gain monk levels, as shown in the Martial Arts column of the Monk table. . When you use the Attack action with an Unarmed Strike or a monk weapon on Your Turn, you can make one Unarmed Strike as a Bonus Action. Using a special damage roll that replaces your damage for unarmed strikes or monk weapons; Getting an attack with a monk weapon or unarmed strike as a bonus action. Great stuff here. You can play a frontline fighter without the need for high strength. Whether as part of their normal bonus attack when unarmed or wielding a monk weapon or as part of a ‘flurry of blows’, monks apply their ability modifier (Strength or Dexterity) to their damage rolls. Using unarmed strike language is also clean because it integrates nicely with the Monk’s unarmed strike damage scaling and Dexterity modifier access. An unarmed strike is always considered a light weapon. Therefore, you can use the Weapon Finesse feat to apply your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier to attack rolls with an unarmed strike. Unarmed strikes do not count as natural weapons (see Combat). The damage from an unarmed strike is considered weapon damage for the purposes of effects that give you a bonus on weapon damage rolls.
A monk or any character with the Improved Unarmed Strike feat can deal lethal or nonlethal damage with unarmed strikes, at his discretion.
