HK developed a series of codes to help identify their military/law enforcement firearms. Using their 2 number codes, it is possible to identify the type of firearm (belt-fed machinegun, submachinegun, etc) and the caliber. Here is how the code system breaks out:
Serial number - 224-010183. This pistol is in great condition and comes with two (15 rnd) magazines. Experience gained with the P30 hammer-fired pistol had a direct influence on the design of the VP9, but the VP9 breaks new ground with its integration of a unique striker firing system with an enhanced HK 'light pull' trigger.

Naturally, there are combos of the first and second number that (as much as we might want one) would produce an HK firearm model number that doesn't (or won't ever) exist. For example: the HK59, the BIG brother of the MP5.... :-)
There have been model number changes over the years, most notably the models 91 and 93. They were originally imported as the 41 and 43, respectively, and if you look at the coding, you'll see they are identified as 'Paramilitary' rifles -- which to this day I maintain that they are. They are not 'Assault Rifles' (which is a media term).
HK Date Codes
Date codes are the next thing that cause a little confusion for new HK owners. Like the model numbering scheme, the date codes are a 2 letter code and indicate the year of manufacture:

Therefore, if your HK91 shows a date code of IH, it was made in 1987. Pretty simple.
Now that we have that squared away, I have to note that it appears that HK has changed their date coding for post-ban LE/military magazines, and there hasn't been any definitive documentation to indicate what this is.

The right side of the chamber is marked with the HK monogram followed by “9mmx19 / 224-047488” and a proof. The right side of the slide is marked with the serial number followed by proofs and the date code. The bottom of the trigger guard is marked “WARNING / REFER TO OWNERS MANUAL” and the bottom of the dust cover has a metal inlay marked “HKI – Columbus GA / 224-047488”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade with a tritium lamp and is dovetailed into the slide. The rear sight is a square notched sight with two tritium maps and is dovetailed onto the slide. The tritium dots are bright and easily acquired in low light environments.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are integral to the frame; it is textured, has finger grooves, removable side plates, and removable backstraps. There are marks on the magazine well from use. The texturing is strong and there are light handling marks. The grip rates in about Fine Plus overall condition. Included are two pairs of side plates and two additional backstraps, all in Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the polygonal rifling is well defined. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are a couple faint marks on the top of the slide. There is light handling wear and standard operational wear. The markings are crisp. The pins are unmarred. Overall, this handgun rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with paperwork including the manual, two additional backstraps in Excellent condition, two pairs of sideplates in Excellent condition, a 10-round mag in Excellent condition, a Crimson Trace frame mounted red laser with a pressure switch in Excellent condition, and a serial matched case.
